Star

These days some music magazines are challenging gender stereotypes; this is mainly done my female R&B stars. On this VIBE magazine cover, BeyoncĂ© is pictured leaning against a white wall in a sexual way covered in water, she’s wearing minimal clothing which is also a typical convention in R&B as a way of showing towards men that women are objects of desire. The female star image is always done eye catching and very dramatic. Their makeup is also very bold and defined, especially their eyes they always have dark colored eye shadow which makes their eyes look more powerfully. To show power some females wear red lipstick. However to suit BeyoncĂ© concept of desire, her eye shadow is done with a bright and powerful colour. When it comes to jewellery the female artists would usually wear big earrings and necklaces but when they wear a lot of necklaces they are sometimes seen as breaking gender stereotypes because it is usually R&B males who wear much more jewelry.
When
it comes to the men of R&B, they are usually pictured topless showing the
many tattoos they have. For example seen on VIBE’s cover, Trey Songz is seen topless,
this is because a lot of male R&B/Hip HOP singers
target market is young teenage girls. This would also appeal to young female
adults as he also is covered in water connoting sexual desire. If the artist is
pictured topless they are usually wearing jeans, slightly hanging low so you
can see their boxers. As seen from both Chris Brown and Trey Songz’s cover
pictures their tattoos are on display, as many R&B/Hip Hop male artists
have tattoos with the majority of them being on their chests if not it will be
on their arms and neck. From XXL’s cover image of Chris Brown you can see if
they would usually have many if not one.
